Buying outdoor lights and seeing IP65, IP67, IP68 ratings? Here's what they actually mean and which one you need.
The IP Code Explained
IP (Ingress Protection) ratings have two digits: first = dust protection (0-6), second = water protection (0-8).

For Most Outdoor Lighting: IP65 Is Enough
Wall lights, gazebo lights, garden lights mounted above ground level face rain and humidity - IP65 handles both. It's also resistant to being hosed down during cleaning.
When You Need IP67/68
- In-ground lights (recessed into driveways/lawns): IP67+ because of standing water
- Pool-adjacent fixtures: IP68
- Flood zones or areas with heavy standing water
One Important Caveat
IP ratings apply to the fixture itself, not the connections. The connectors between lights and power supply are often the weak point - use IP65-rated connectors for outdoor runs or protect connections inside waterproof junction boxes.
