Installing recessed downlights is one of the most satisfying DIY projects - and with low-voltage LED systems, it's genuinely safe for beginners. Here's the complete step-by-step guide.
Tools You'll Need
- Hole saw (matching your light's cutout size, e.g. 30mm, 60mm, 90mm)
- Drill
- Voltage tester
- Wire strippers
- Screwdriver
Step 1: Plan Your Layout
Mark the ceiling positions with a pencil. For general lighting, space lights 1.5-2x the ceiling height apart (e.g. 2.4m ceiling = 3.6-4.8m spacing). Keep 300mm minimum from walls.
Step 2: Cut the Holes
Use the hole saw on a drill at low speed. Always check for joists or wiring first with a stud finder - cutting into a joist is annoying, cutting into a wire is dangerous.
Step 3: Run the Wiring
For low-voltage systems (12V), the driver converts mains power safely. Mount the driver near the light or in a junction box. Turn off the breaker first and verify with a voltage tester.
Step 4: Connect and Insert
Connect the wires (matching colors), tuck them in, and push the light into the hole until the spring clips click. The clips hold the light flush against the ceiling.
Step 5: Test and Enjoy
Turn the breaker back on and test. If a light doesn't work, check the connections and the driver output before suspecting the light itself.
Safety Notes
- Never work on live circuits - always isolate power at the breaker
- Use IP44+ rated lights in bathrooms (zone 2 and beyond)
